A Community Effort to Support Dementia Care Activities

Our residents at Spinnaker View organised a tombola with the support of All Care’s dedicated team, raising over £220 for activities!

Supporting a loved one with dementia involves more than just meeting their day-to-day care needs; it’s about enhancing their quality of life, creating moments of joy, and building a supportive community around them. At Spinnaker View, this dedication was evident in our recent tabletop sale and tombola, an event organised with heart and enthusiasm by our residents and staff. This event showcased the power of community and raised funds to enrich the activities available to our residents.

The Event

Spinnaker View residents decided to host a tabletop sale and tombola to raise funds for their activities programme. In true community spirit, everyone pitched in—residents collected donated items from their rooms and participated in a “late spring clean” to prepare. It became a fun task, with raffle tickets attached to everything in sight (except the people, of course!) for the tombola.

The All Care team offered assistance, but the residents took the lead, giving them a sense of purpose and the satisfaction of organising an event from the ground up. This sense of agency is essential for many people with dementia, as it helps them maintain autonomy and fosters a sense of belonging. Family members and friends joined in on the day, adding to the warm, lively atmosphere.

On the day of the sale, the sun was shining, setting a perfect scene for an afternoon full of joy, laughter, and community spirit. Families, friends, and residents enjoyed the event, browsing through the items on offer, and joining in the tombola.

To make the event even more memorable, our partners at Cater Plus provided sandwiches and cake, ensuring everyone had a treat. The presence of familiar faces and delicious food made the event feel like a festive celebration, bringing smiles to everyone’s faces.

The event was not only a success in terms of community building but also financially. Through sales and tombola tickets, the residents raised over £220, which will be directed towards the residents’ activities fund. Activities play a critical role in dementia care, offering mental and social stimulation that can help to alleviate symptoms, improve mood, and enhance quality of life. The funds raised will go toward planning more events, arts and crafts, musical afternoons, and other enriching experiences that the residents at Spinnaker View truly enjoy.

The Role of Community Events in Dementia Care

For individuals with dementia, social engagement is a vital component of care, particularly within familiar and supportive environments like Spinnaker View. Research shows that community-based events and shared activities can help those with dementia maintain social skills, prevent loneliness, and improve their overall well-being. Events like the tabletop sale provide residents with a break from the routine, a sense of excitement, and opportunities for reminiscence, which can stimulate memory and foster connections with others.

At All Care, we understand that dementia care is not only about medical needs but also about creating a space where individuals feel respected, loved, and supported. Our care services go beyond physical health to address emotional and psychological well-being, focusing on holistic support that encompasses the individual’s entire experience.
