Processing Grief: a Space for Reflection and Remembrance at Nicholson House

Our Extra Care scheme in Nicholson House has partnered with local youth mental health charity The Abingdon Bridge (TAB) to create a special memory and wellbeing space, helping residents and staff process grief, share memories, and support one another during difficult times.

The initiative was inspired following the sad loss of a resident earlier this year. As TAB visited Nicholson House to begin planning summer activities with residents, conversations naturally turned towards remembrance and the importance of having somewhere to reflect.

Together, residents and young people developed the idea of a dedicated memory bench, or “chatty bench”, where people could sit, talk, remember loved ones, and find comfort in shared experiences.

The Abingdon Bridge generously donated the bench and spent time with residents decorating it, alongside colourful plant pots and thoughtful pebbles carrying positive messages. What began during a period of sadness has since become a lasting feature within the garden, creating a welcoming space for reflection, conversation, and connection.

Carol Bosley, Registered Manager at Nicholson House, said:

“This is an incredibly valuable initiative that will benefit both our residents and staff. Losing someone within our community can have a profound impact, and having a dedicated space where people can reflect, share memories, and talk openly is so important. We’re extremely grateful to The Abingdon Bridge for helping create something so meaningful that will support people for years to come.”

The All Care Extra Care team played a key role in supporting the initiative, encouraging service users to get involved and helping bring the project to life. The team will also continue to promote the space to both residents and colleagues, recognising the importance of having somewhere safe and supportive to process grief.

The partnership is a wonderful example of how community collaboration can create positive, lasting outcomes, transforming loss into a space that encourages connection, understanding, and wellbeing for our service users and Nicholson House.
